Despite owning the Unlimited TJ with the longer wheelbase, my internal storage is still very limited. I’m going camping for a week this month and I’m getting nervous about whether I can fit everything I want to take.

I spotted this while visiting a couple of state parks today (pics later). I had started to think a trailer might be useful, but I have no clue about them, and I didn’t stop today to find out what the owner is asking because I was short on time.

So, what should I consider when considering a trailer for camping gear ? I’m not an overlander so I don’t need serious off-road chops in a trailer. Being able to traverse d irt roads can’t hurt.

I would get one of these, or a safari rack. Trailers are a bitch and a half to deal with.

I have something similar to that (cheap HF) but it’s unstable and requires a hitch extension to get past my tire, making it even more unstable.

I’ d definitely prefer that but only if I can make it rock solid.

Trailers are just difficult because it takes a lot of practice to back them up nicely and you couldn’t fit in a standard parking spot.

Safari/roof   rack would be best. Personally would go RTT and w/minimal packing kit . There is a ton of good easy pack limited space camping gear (not an over landing guy but still look at the gear). Pull the back seat if you don’t need it... Go look around Expedition Portal for organizing ideas and light pack setups. Getting Rotopax or jerry cans for water (and fuel obv) on the exterior is an easy way to get some space inside. Same for mounting jacks, max tracks, recovery gear etc.

That trailer is a M1101 or 1102. The 1102 max GVWR is 4200lb, 1101 is 3400. They are heavy, ~ 1500lb empty. Can go anywhere through.

Roof rack is problematic for a variety of reasons: not many of them play well with soft tops, e.g., and the good ones are crazy expensive, especially combined with a RTT.

Plus, I have a degenerative back disease that makes removing heavy objects from a roof rack problematic. I suspect if I ever buy an XJ I won’t be able to keep the spare up there.

Unfortunately my back seat is currently locked in place because the release cable froze up, and my excessively-strong brother-in-law snapped it while trying to release it. So I need to figure that out, but I also have a rear trunk that abuts it and was brutal to install and I suspect will be brutal to remove to gain access to figure out how to free the seat .

This Jeep is a never-ending horror show. Don’t get me started on my transmission. Or lockers.

Thanks for the info on the trailer.

Just throwing ideas out.  Sucks about your back man. R oof things are out which minimizes you’re options. Those hitch racks don’t look beefy enough for off-road use either.

For the seats w as thinking just unbolting mounts from the tub (T50? dunno, it’s big) , not the pin lock inside/flipping it out. Would think you could get to all the fasteners from the front.. . Should Tuffy boxes are great until you have to get them out, should be fine to leave there if you can get the seat out. Thing takes up huge space. Locking storage is always good.

Lockers - previous owner mess up the bypass mod? Air pump/air line leak? I don’t believe you about Chrysler transmission issues lol.

Look for an anti-wobble hitch stabilizer.  https://www.google.com/search?q=anti+wobble+hitch&rlz=1CDGOYI_enUS699US699&oq=antiwobble&aqs=chrome.1.69i57j0l3.3969j0j4&hl=en-US&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8

Stability, good fore/aft balance, light weight and a best hitch you can find that isn’t the traditional 2" ball. Oh and using Jeep hubs so you have matched wheels and don’t need a different spare.

A decent 6'x4' should be more than ample but you could go much smaller as long as you figure out the visibility issues when it’s attached...

I’d look for a light trailer as I think your payload and towing capacity are both pretty low if I remember correctly. I think the old military trailers qualify as ”not light”

It’s actually pretty decent, 3500 lbs. T he short wheel base TJs were much lower than that.

A 1500lb trailer would leave me plenty of headroom...but with my back I wouldn’t want to be moving one around by hand, so there’s that.

Yeah that's not bad I think the JKs are much lower capacity.

I don’t know that I have the energy to describe it all, so a quick recap:

Rear diff rebuild

Rear locker blows up, necessitating another rebuild + Eaton e-locker replacement (still not convinced the idiots who did my first rebuild weren’t to blame)

New e-locker lasts one hour on the trail before failing. Replaced.

Idiots who did both rebuilds and the lockers did terrible job of wiring up the new e-locker, so it’s now disabled, which disables both lockers

Front diff started giving me trouble, had my then- favorite mechanic take it apart, but he didn’t know how to put it back together. Finally had to replace the entire axle because bad advice.

Transmission, half-ass rebuild

A year later, full rebuild

A year after that, another full rebuild

And it still sucks. 1st gear is unusable.

Oh , and a sold year of stalling due to fuel injection overheating, and new cats, and death wobble...

My yellow LJ is certainly the right color for a lemon.

JFC. I’ve sold cars for less than that. Good on you for sticking with it or for all the self hate lol .

Seriously that’s horrible and disappointing . I get the lockers are “fancy” but all of the axle stuff is easy. Trans rebuilds aren’t hard either usually for a knowledgeable person. Seems like a lot more labor related (capability) issues than anything. EFI thing is weird, dead track at isn’t a surprise.  Hope you can get it all fixed right.

I’ve bought it 2-3 times over, so I’d better love it.

my 4 x 8 trailer could prob carry this but it is also prob over the weight limit for it

If you mean your trailer could (maybe) haul that trailer, sorry, I was ambiguous. I was just trying to solicit info on that trailer in particular, and ideas in general.

I think, now that I know hitch stabilizers are a thing, I’ll be fine with the cargo carrier I already have.
